Modern Art and Culture
Art is something
that has been extremely important in terms of helping individual civilizations
to advance and develop a culture of their own. Art, for centuries, has been an
unbelievably powerful force that allows people to express themselves, their
beliefs or simply to share beauty with others. Much like the early
civilizations and cultures that were developed in part with the help from their
individual artwork, art, over time, develops and evolves.
In the
modern era of today, art has taken on a much different appearance than it has
in the past. In my opinion, people in this day and age are focused or excited
by art as a physical representation of beauty, expression or ideology, such as
paintings, sculptures, photographs, etc. Instead, the people of today are a lot
more focused on and influenced by art in the forms of music, fashion, filmography,
along with many more of the likes. Why this is, I am not exactly sure to be completely
honest.
My best
guess would be that the modern technology of today and the use of social media
platforms have deterred people from viewing art in the same was as those of us
who did not grow up with access to the internet or with phones that we could
carry around in our pockets. With how quickly technology developed, especially
personal technology and communication via the internet, I think that cultural
advancement was inevitable. Humans, once they were able to access the modern
technology of today, were bound to completely change the ways they think and feel,
not just about art, but about an array of different topics. Traditional art,
unfortunately, is just not up to date enough for a lot of the people that walk
this Earth today.
With the
world around us very quickly modernizing, so is art. Traditional forms of art are
nowhere near as interesting, unique, special and meaningful today as they used
to be for those who did not have the same modern amenities as the majority of
people alive today. I personally think that this change is neither good, nor
bad. Simply, when you live in a society that values modernity and constant
advancement, change is a past of life that everyone must acknowledge and accept.

Wow Drew, I never thought about how the constant need for "new" impacted art. You make a great point in stating that the modernization of the world is drastically modernizing art. Social media has also definitely impacted one's opinions on art because of the platform that artists now have to share their work, right from the comfort of their own homes, instead of the previous methods of having a gallery show, or having an exhibit in a museum.
ReplyDeleteHey Drew! I loved to hear your perspective of modern art and the reasoning behind it. I completely agree with you that art is evolving due to the new mediums that are being presented along with new technology. I also agree with your point about how the purpose of art is about beauty, but I also believe that it is about getting a message across. Especially with everything going on in our country, people are using art to create a more understandable explanation for a complex topic, for example the BLM movement.
ReplyDeleteChange is always inevitable. There are always different methods being produced of how to improve almost every aspect and way of life. You make an extremely good point Drew of how the world is rapidly modernizing and how traditional paintings don't portray that "WOW" factor like it used to. Just like in all things, art is being improved and has now mostly moved into this digital era of animated movies, photoshopped images, and digitized pictures. The culture of the art world, at least from my understanding, has never truly hit a ceiling of it's own potential and I think you convey that well. Maybe it is ease of access or the ability to create art without having to be great at drawing or painting might draw in a large crowd and an entirely new industry of assisted, computerized art programs.
